Day 1 Notes-October 27, 2011

Welcome by Lynne Herr, ESU 6 Tech Trainer.

Introductory Activity:
Get up, meet 3 people, and share the most creative Halloween costume you have had or seen.

Attendees reviewed the wiki for Design Team 1--Year 1 and Year 2. Reported out what occurred during both years.
Year 1:
  • Teachers went to Cuperatino, CA
  • iPod and all things iPod.

Year 2:
  • Macbooks
  • Movies and podcasting (how to "Macs" out the tools)
  • Big project: Spring Showcase

Year 3 hopes from the attendees:
  • At least one resource to use tomorrow.
  • Students hope their teachers will actually use what they are learn.

Everyone is creating a wiki.
  • Login with 6 characters; includes symbols, numbers and capital letters.
  • Check "Protected" and that this is a K-12 wiki.
  • Record the log-in name, password and your address.

Origin of the word wiki: quick and easy (Hawaiian language).
Fastest and easiest way to make a website.

Lynne highlighted the features of wiki and how to use the Word-processng features.
We will use the wiki to collect links that house our projects.

How would you add a link to your wiki?
  • Table task: Everyone has to figure out how to add a link to the wiki.
  • Add a link to your district web-site or CNN.
  • CNN

If there's aren't going well with Microsoft Internet Explorer, try Safari (Apple) or Chrome (Google).

Manage Wiki:
  • Under People, it says "Members". You can invite someone to have editing rights on the wiki.

Themes and Colors:
  • Choose colors that you can read.

Reviewed the Online Student Engagement Tools Link on the Wiki:
What topic that you teach would lend itself well to using comics in the classroom?
Teacher/Student partners are studying the various tools (comics). They have 30 minutes to develop a 3 slide comic strip.
All attendees shared their projects during the quick showcase. Many different comic tools were used.

Debrief from students regarding the Comic Strip activity:
  • Content is key; so you know how to design the content of the comic strip.
  • This is really creative! Flexibility of being creative!
  • I'm not an artist--so this was a lot easier!
  • Most students published their work to the web. Teachers usually don't publish to the Web.
    • How do you transform your classroom from "hand it in" to publish with all?
  • One student used "Comic Life" on Lynne's iPad.
    • App through iTunes.
  • The first time you assign something like this is the hardest. But the 2nd time, there are people in the room that have more skills for using the software than what we originally had.

Command Shift 4: Screen Shot

Video Clip: Sir Ken Robinson (Educational Reform: Creativity in Schools)
TED Talks (one of the best ways to learn)
Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED)
All speeches are under 20 minutes.
TEDX (you can hold TED events for "regular folks")
TEDX in Seattle (planned and facilitated by kids)

Questions for sharing after the video clip:
  • Think of at least 2 things you want to ask a teacher about what he's talking about (student).
  • Think of at least 2 things you want to ask kids about (teacher).

Groups used GoAnimate, Xtranormal, etc. to create movies discussing the questions above from Sir Ken Robinson.
All groups showcased their movies.

Lynne provided additional insight related to wikis.
History, Notify Me, Discussion and how to copy/paste from one wiki to another.
